The Standby Letter of Credit (SBLC) is one of the most powerful financial instruments in international trade, removing the trust gap between counterparties and guaranteeing payment to the seller. Known in Turkish as a “Teminat Akreditifi”, an SBLC is not so much a payment instrument as a “bank guarantee” that is called upon should the buyer fail to meet its obligations.
Governed by international banking rules (UCP 600 or ISP98), this instrument is typically transmitted in SWIFT MT760 format and issued through prestigious, globally recognised Top-Tier banks.
01Uses and Advantages of an SBLC
An SBLC is considerably more flexible than a standard letter of credit and delivers critical advantages in the following areas:
- Payment Guarantee
- Should the buyer fail to make the payment due under the commercial contract, the bank steps in and undertakes, unconditionally, to pay the seller.
- Tender and Performance Bond
- Used in large-scale infrastructure projects, in tender participation and as a Performance Bond.
- Increasing Credit Lines (Monetisation)
- A valid, strong SBLC can be converted into cash or a credit line (Discounting/Monetisation) through international financial institutions.
- Intermediary-Free Trade
- In high-tonnage commodity trade in particular (fuel, sugar, minerals, etc.), it minimises risk for both parties and speeds up the transaction.

02SBLC Operational Process and Transfer Procedure
The SBLC process is not merely a piece of paper — it is a digital chain of undertakings between banks. Within the framework of international banking standards (ICC), this chain proceeds through the following steps:
- Contract and Draft (Verbiage) ApprovalThe process begins with the commercial contract between the parties. The SBLC wording (verbiage) to be requested from the bank is reviewed by the legal departments of both parties and the banks concerned. The text is checked for any “reserve” (conditional clause).
- RWA (Ready, Willing and Able) MessageThe Issuing Bank sends the Receiving Bank a preliminary SWIFT MT799 message declaring that it is ready, willing and financially able to carry out the transaction.
- Issuance of the InstrumentSWIFT MT760: once full agreement is reached on the draft, the issuing bank creates the SBLC and transmits it in MT760 format over SWIFT, the secure interbank messaging network used worldwide. From the moment this message is received, the SBLC is an irrevocable bank guarantee.
- Authentication and ApprovalThe receiving bank verifies the authenticity of the incoming MT760 message and the authorisation codes of the bank officials. Once verification is complete, the instrument is recorded as “active” in the beneficiary’s account.
- Utilisation and IndemnificationIf the buyer makes the underlying payment on time, the SBLC lapses at maturity without being called upon. If the buyer fails to meet its obligation, however, the beneficiary (seller) submits the required documents to the bank and demands payment of the SBLC amount. The bank is obliged to make this payment “on first demand”.
